Monday Morning in Crown Heights: Crown Street between Bedford and Rogers Avenues

This morning, walking from one of Bedford Avenue buildings of Medgar Evers College to our apartment on Crown Street at Nostrand Avenue, we once again enjoyed the early fall beauty of the block just before ours -- between Bedford and Rogers -- which got Honorable Mention earlier this year for the Greenest Block in Brooklyn. (The winner was just five blocks north on Lincoln Road.)

Walking down Crown Street is always such a pleasure.

Wednesday Night in Williamsburg: Mark Wholesale, Inc. Ribbon-Cutting Celebration at the Lot on Rodney Street and Broadway

Coming home from the concert at East River Park, as we got off the J train at Marcy Street, we heard klezmer music, and as we turned onto Rodney Street just north of Broadway, just behind where we're currently living, we saw a gorgeously decorated party at the vacant lot.

A poster at the entrance described this private party for VIPs as a "ribbon cutting" and names Mark Wholesale, Inc., which has its business on Bedford Avenue, so I guess they're opening something here. Cool.

There was a lavish display of lights, liquor and food under a big white party tent, and Hasidic men were gathering at small tables in front of it. Soulful klezmer music was playing, and a man with a sweet voice sung lulling songs in Yiddish. We stared from behind the chain link fence and listened to the pleasant, highly amplified music. The smell of seared beef - filet mignon? - made even a vegetarian a little swoony, so we left after a while of being outside, listening in.

Even as we write this at 10:30 p.m., from our bedroom, which faces South 5th Street, we can still hear the party band playing klezmer.

Early Tuesday Evening in Williamsburg: Chabad's Menorah on the First Night of Chanukah at N. 7th Street and Bedford Avenue

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah (our old-school preferred spelling) and we caught the Chabad menorah at North 7th Street and Bedford Avenue lit for the holiday. We're heading west in a couple of days. Happy Chanukah!

Monday Afternoon in Williamsburg: Grand Opening of Bagelsmith at Metropolitan Avenue and Lorimer Street

We were thrilled to see today's grand opening of Bagelsmith at the southeast corner of Lorimer Street and Metropolitan Avenue, which has been vacant forever.

It's the newest branch of the great Bedford Avenue place. There are entrances both on Metropolitan and Lorimer. If we can remember back to 1997, when we first stayed at our current location, this actually used to be two different stores.

We remember getting the New York Times from a newsstand-type place on Lorimer Street the day our op-ed about New Jersey appeared back then. The corner store was variously over the years different things, we think: a bodega, video store, maybe even a liquor store.

Bagelsmith is a big improvement.

We walked over to Bedford Avenue and then on North 6th Street late this blustery afternoon for the Williamsburg Witches' Walk Halloween Parade, where we saw lots of cute costumed kids.
